How to Add Fractions in Inches Without a Calculator

Adding tape measure fractions by hand is one of the most error-prone tasks in woodworking. The classic mistake is adding numerators without finding a common denominator first — adding 3/8 and 5/16 and getting 8/24 instead of the correct 11/16.

The Manual Method

To add 3 5/8″ + 1 11/16″:

  1. Find a common denominator: 8 and 16 share the common denominator 16
  2. Convert 5/8 to 10/16
  3. Add fractions: 10/16 + 11/16 = 21/16 = 1 5/16
  4. Add whole numbers: 3 + 1 + 1 (carry) = 5
  5. Result: 5 5/16″

When Manual Math Goes Wrong

The error happens when denominators differ (1/8 + 1/16) or when the fraction sum exceeds 1 and needs carrying (10/16 + 7/16 = 17/16 = 1 1/16). Both require extra steps that are easy to skip under workshop conditions.

TapeMath shortcut: Enter the first measurement, tap +, enter the second, tap =. The result appears on the visual tape with exact fraction, decimal, and mm. Faster and more reliable than mental math at the bench.
