How to Convert mm to 32nds
The formula is: 32nds = mm × 32 ÷ 25.4
Round to the nearest whole number to get the closest 32nd-inch mark on a tape measure. For example: 9.525 mm × 32 ÷ 25.4 = 12.00 exactly — so 9.525 mm = 12/32 = 3/8 inch.
Exact Metric–Imperial Conversions
Only a few mm values convert exactly to common fractions because 25.4 mm = 1 inch is the only defined relationship:
- 3.175 mm = 1/8″ exactly
- 6.35 mm = 1/4″ exactly
- 9.525 mm = 3/8″ exactly
- 12.7 mm = 1/2″ exactly
- 15.875 mm = 5/8″ exactly
- 19.05 mm = 3/4″ exactly
- 22.225 mm = 7/8″ exactly
- 25.4 mm = 1″ exactly
All other mm values produce approximations when expressed as 32nds. The error column in the table shows how far off each approximation is in mm.
Why 32nds?
Standard US tape measures show marks at 1/16″ intervals. Many professional trades — gunsmithing, precision woodworking, machining — require 1/32″ precision. When working with metric hardware (screws, dowels, sheet goods) in an imperial shop, converting to 32nds lets you find the right mark on your tape without a separate calculation.
